How we review our content

Feeding a baby is high stakes. Here's exactly where our advice comes from and how we check it.

Official guidance and research

US and UK advice side by side

Where our advice comes from

Every food, safety and nutrition claim on Tiny Solids is based on guidance from official health bodies and peer-reviewed research, and every food, guide, recipe and age page lists its sources at the bottom. We rely on:

  • American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), including HealthyChildren.org
  • Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
  • UK National Health Service (NHS)
  • National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and the 2021 allergy prevention consensus from AAAAI, ACAAI and CSACI
  • US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), for fish and allergen guidance
  • World Health Organization (WHO)

US, UK and other countries

Most feeding advice is the same everywhere. Where the guidance agrees, each page gives one answer. Where it differs, we say what each country recommends, usually in a Where guidance differs box that names the health body behind it. If a point only covers one country's advice, the page says so.

Use the Guidance picker at the top of any page to choose the country you follow. Your country's advice moves to the top of those boxes, and safety pages show your local emergency number. We cover:

  • United States: AAP, CDC and FDA
  • United Kingdom: NHS
  • Elsewhere: we show US and UK guidance, and WHO guidance where it applies. Check your national health service's advice too.

How every page is checked

Every page goes through two checks before it's published:

  • Source check. Every claim is cross-checked, line by line, against the official guidance and the sources we cite. Anything that doesn't match is fixed or removed.
  • Medical review. A team of independent medical professionals then reviews the page for accuracy and safety. Nothing is published until they've signed it off. To protect their privacy, we don't publish our reviewers' names.

Every page is checked again whenever it changes, and we re-check pages when we learn the guidance behind them has changed. Food pages and guides show the date they were last checked.

Rules we never break

  • We never show or describe a food in a form that's unsafe for the age we're talking about.
  • Safety pages, like choking and allergic reactions, stay calm and plain.
  • We track the foods you offer, never how much your baby eats. No clean-plate rewards.

This isn't medical advice

Tiny Solids is general information to help you feel prepared. It can't replace advice from your own pediatrician, who knows your baby. Read our medical disclaimer.
