  • 1 can (400 g / 14 oz)chopped tomatoesno salt added
  • 1 tbsptomato paste (purée)check the label for no added salt
  • 200 ml (generous ¾ cup)water
  • 1 tspsweet (mild) paprikaoptional; not hot or smoked hot paprika, and not chili powder or a chili seasoning mix
  • ½ tspground cuminoptional; ground, not whole seeds. If your child has a peanut allergy, read the cumin page first
  • 1 clovegarlicfinely minced, optional
  • 1 tbspolive or vegetable oil
  • 1–2 tbsp per servingplain full-fat yogurtoptional topping; offer only once your baby has had dairy on its own without a reaction

Steps

  1. 1Wash your hands. Rinse and peel the onion, then chop it finely. Rinse the pepper under running water, remove the stem, seeds and white ribs, and peel it with a vegetable peeler if you can (the skin can stay tough when the flesh is soft). Chop it into small pieces no bigger than about 1 cm (just under ½ inch). Tip the beans into a sieve and rinse them under running water.
  2. 2Heat the oil in a large pan over medium-low heat and cook the onion and pepper gently for about 10 minutes, stirring, until soft. Add the garlic, paprika and cumin and stir for 1 minute, without letting them brown.
  3. 3Add the turkey and cook it, breaking it up into small crumbs with a wooden spoon, for about 5 to 8 minutes. Don't go by color: the turkey is done when a food thermometer shows 165°F (74°C), which you'll check in the next step. There's no need to rinse raw turkey. Wash your hands, board and spoon after handling it.
  4. 4Stir in the beans, tomatoes, tomato paste and water. Simmer, partly covered, for 25 to 30 minutes, stirring now and then, until the pepper squashes easily between your fingers and the sauce is thick. The turkey must reach 165°F (74°C): check with a food thermometer. Don't add salt, chili, stock or seasoning mixes.
  5. 5Take your baby's portion out now, before any salt, chili or hot sauce goes in. Stir well so there are no dry clumps of spice, and pick out any curls of pepper skin. For a baby under 9 months, mash or blend it until every bean is broken up. From 9 months, press every bean flat with a fork, and tear each flattened kidney bean in half so no piece is bigger than about 1 cm (just under ½ inch). Spread it in a shallow bowl to cool, stirring, and check it's only just warm before serving.

How to serve it by age

6 months+

Mash or blend the chili into a thick, lumpy mash with the turkey finely minced and moist and no whole beans left, and serve it on a pre-loaded spoon or stirred into mashed potato. If beans are new, offer a little on their own first.

9 months+

Serve the chili thick, with every bean pressed flat, each kidney bean torn in half, and pieces of pepper no bigger than about 1 cm (just under ½ inch). Spoon it over soft baked potato so it's easy to scoop with fingers or a spoon.

12 months+

Serve the family chili from the unsalted pot, with every bean mashed or pressed flat (kidney beans torn in half) and pepper pieces about 1 cm (just under ½ inch). No whole beans. Add a spoonful of plain yogurt on top once dairy has been introduced. Chili heat, salt and tortilla chips go on the adults' plates only: the CDC lists chips as a choking hazard for young children.

Where US and UK guidance differ on this recipe

United States(AAP and CDC)Your setting

The AAP says fresh baby food should be cooked with no added salt or seasoning, and doesn't give an age for spices or garlic. If you'd rather follow that closely, leave out the paprika, cumin and garlic, or ask your pediatrician. Cook ground turkey to 165°F (74°C), checked with a food thermometer.

United Kingdom(NHS)Your setting

The NHS says not to add salt, stock cubes or gravy to your baby's food or cooking water. Its butterbean goulash recipe for babies from 6 months cooks paprika and green pepper with canned chopped tomatoes and canned butterbeans with no added salt or sugar. If you use spices, keep them mild, cooked in and unsalted.

We cover US and UK guidance in detail. Elsewhere, check your national health service's advice too.

If your baby reacts

The optional extras contain milk. Introduce one new allergen at a time, mixed into a food your baby already eats, before serving it in a dish with other new foods. Contact your pediatrician, GP or health visitor if you notice mild signs after eating, such as a few hives or a little vomiting. See signs of a reaction.

Call 911999your local emergency number (such as 112 in Europe or 000 in Australia) now if your baby has trouble breathing, wheezing, can't cough or cry, has lips, mouth, tongue or throat that suddenly swell, or becomes pale, bluish, floppy or unresponsive. Also call if hives come with repeated vomiting.

Leftovers and the rest of the family

Storing it

Cool leftovers quickly in shallow containers and keep them covered in the fridge for 3 to 4 days, or freeze them in small portions for 2 to 3 months. Thaw frozen chili in the fridge and eat it within 24 hours of thawing. Reheat only the portion you need, and only once, until steaming hot, 165°F (74°C), or bring it back to a rolling boil, stirring so there are no cold spots, then let it cool before serving. Throw away anything left in your baby's bowl. Don't leave chili at room temperature for more than 2 hours, or 1 hour if it's hotter than 90°F (32°C).

Nana the banana

For the grown-ups

Take your baby's portion out first, then add salt, chili powder or a chopped fresh chili to the rest of the pot for the adults. Top the adults' bowls with grated cheese, sour cream or hot sauce, and serve with rice, or with tortilla chips for the adults.
